Working with older clients
We can’t stop the ageing process but a change in the way we think about ageing can make life run smoother.
Fear of falling can lead to a major loss of confidence. We all trip and fall during our lifetime but a fall for an elderly person can eventually lead to them becoming house bound. When we fall we feel shock and embarrassment. This can lead to anxiety and the worry that we will fall again.
If this anxiety is allowed to grow and a person limits their activity it then affects the quality of their life. Fear of falling can become a phobia and this can lead to loss of confidence and depression.
Lack of mobility leads to a decrease in strength and the chances of falling again increased. The elderly person begins to lose their independence and becomes reliant on other people more and more.
Practical help like exercises to increase mobility are available. Friends and family can encourage people to stay active and accompany them when they first go out after a fall can all be of help.
The subconscious mind stores irrational beliefs and its aim is to protect us. In the case of someone who has a fall this excessive fear can stop people doing simple things like walking to the shops or a walk in the park.
Hypnotherapy can help because hypnotherapy works with the subconscious mind to change those negative beliefs that are limiting a person’s life. Hypnotherapy can help if a phobia has developed, it can also teach relaxation techniques and calm unwanted anxiety about the dangers of falling again.
The onset of dementia can cause depress and as patients become anxious about their future, hypnosis can help with relaxation and can also help the mind concentrate on more positive behaviour. Helping to improve the quality of life.
Insomnia can also lead to anxiety and depression and hypnosis is a recognised treatment for insomnia. The cycle of worry about lack of sleep and also the tendency lie awake worry about things that are happening in life, perhaps even the worry about falling over can impact on a persons daily life.
Hypnosis has a role to play in increasing the quality of life for elderly people.
